One of the requests I get most often from aspiring One of the requests I get most often from aspiring speakers is, “Can I pick your brain about how you built your speaking career?”

And I get it! When you’re trying to break into the speaking industry, it can feel like there’s some secret formula involving speaker representation, a massive social media following, or an extraordinary personal story.

But that’s not how I built mine.

Building a successful speaking business is a lot like earning a black belt.

You show up to the dojo (where mind and body train together). You put in the reps. You build relationships. You get taken down A LOT (hello, rejection!).

You learn, refine your signature moves (AKA your content), and keep showing up to the mat.
12+ years and hundreds of stages later, I’ve learned a lot about the business of speaking, about resilience, and about how I respond under pressure.

And some of my biggest lessons have come from the things I didn’t do.

Here are 5 things I did NOT do to build my speaking business. 👇

To my fellow speakers and entrepreneurs, what’s one key lesson you’ve learned while building your business?

What if you're more powerful than you think? 🥋 Fo What if you're more powerful than you think? 🥋

For years, I taught women how to defend themselves from the outside in.

But over time, I realized that some of the most important battles we face aren't physical.

They're the battles with self-doubt. Fear. People-pleasing. The need to control everything around us.

And here's what martial arts taught me:

True power isn't about controlling the world around you. It's about learning to lead yourself.

Your thoughts. Your energy. Your reactions. Your choices.

That's the heart of my new book, Secrets of the Sensei, coming February 23, 2027 with @tarcher_books .

And it's something we can all practice, starting today.

💬 Where in your life are you learning to trust your own power?

What if the parts of you that have been broken bec What if the parts of you that have been broken become the strongest parts of you? ❤️

Grief has a way of bringing us to our knees. Shaking our identity. Making us question everything we thought we knew about ourselves and our lives.

But what if breaking down isn't the end of the story?

In this week's episode of The Art of Badassery, my guest @DeborahHanlon shares the inspiration behind her book, ReAssembling Yourself: Turning Grief into Growth.

We talk about how loss can change us, how we begin putting ourselves back together, and how we can emerge with a new sense of strength, purpose, and possibility.

Not because the pain was necessary or deserved, but because of what we choose to do as we move through it.

What if we stopped telling people to move ON from grief and started allowing ourselves to move WITH it? ❤️

Grief changes us. Whether it's the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a dream, or a version of ourselves.

And healing doesn't mean pretending it never happened.

In this clip, my guest @DeborahHanlon explains what she calls "The Echo." Those moments when an old hurt resurfaces, but no longer has the power to knock us down for days, weeks, or months.

That's progress. That's healing. And that's growth.

Stop, breathe and get outside! I mean it. You thin Stop, breathe and get outside! I mean it. You think that pausing your workday means less productivity. But taking intentional pauses will help you think more clearly and save time because you’ll make less mistakes, make decisions with more clarity and feel better too!

Stare at a tree, a bush a flowerbed.

Even leave your phone at home if you dare.

Take intentional pauses and watch your productivity increase over time.
