When was the last time you felt triggered by the news, a text, or your own inner critic and wished you could stay calm instead of spiraling?
In this solo episode, host Jenn Cassetta shares why she’s been in creation mode for her new book, Secrets of the Sensei: Emotional Self-Defense to Protect Your Peace and Reclaim Your Power, and explains the goal: becoming the steady, discerning “sensei” of your life.
Drawing from martial arts, she offers three practical moves to protect your peace: build awareness by noticing body cues before a reaction takes over, regulate your nervous system with “stop, drop, and breathe” (three slow breaths), and choose your next right step by asking how your future self would respond. She also introduces a free Resilience Reservoir Assessment measuring physical, mental, emotional, and vision/flow reserves, with personalized prescriptions to refill them.

Unleashing Your Inner Sensei: Emotional Self-Defense for a Chaotic World
Welcome to The Art of Badassery! I’m Jenn Cassetta, and today, I’m thrilled to be sharing some insights from my solo journey into emotional self-defense. Life has been a hive of activity for me, with book edits, speaking engagements, and coaching all part of my orbit. But now, it’s just you and me, diving deep into ways we can protect our peace and reclaim our power.
The Journey from White Belt to Sensei
In my forthcoming book, “Secrets of the Sensei: Emotional Self-Defense to Protect Your Peace and Reclaim Your Power,” I map out nine secrets that will guide you to master your own life with the wisdom and calm of a sensei. Imagine transforming from student to teacher, as I’ve woven into a martial arts theme to embody this empowerment journey.
Why Emotional Self-Defense?
While physical threats may not confront us daily, emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges certainly do. To navigate this landscape, we need techniques that go beyond physical defense. Think of it as emotional self-defense—tools to help us handle negativity, stress, and self-doubt without being overwhelmed.

Three Moves to Master Emotional Self-Defense
- Awareness
Awareness is your first line of defense. Just as you maintain situational awareness in martial arts, stay tuned to what’s happening inside your body. Are your shoulders tense? Is your heart racing? Recognizing these signals helps create space between stimulus and reaction. - Regulation
Remember the childhood drill of stop, drop, and roll? Here, it’s stop, drop, and breathe. Breathing deeply with awareness can regulate your nervous system, bringing you back to calmness and clarity. Practice the sensei breath: inhale deeply through the nose, pause, then exhale through the nose or mouth. - Choose Your Next Right Action
Cultivate the ability to choose your next step consciously. Instead of reacting on impulse, consider how your future self would want you to respond. This power of choice can transform not only your immediate reactions but your life trajectory.
Embrace Your Inner Sensei
Life’s challenges can be overwhelming, but mastering your internal responses keeps you grounded. Whether it’s dealing with criticism or curbing your inner critic’s voice, these tools are your ally. I encourage you to explore the Resilience Reservoir Assessment I’ve developed to measure and enhance your coping strategies.
Stay connected with me on social media, and let’s keep this discussion going. Your journey to becoming your own sensei has never been more crucial or more empowering. Thank you for being here, and I’m excited to share more tools and insights in the months and years to come.
Key Takeaways:
