Women in Leadership: Why Connection, Boundaries, and Resilience Matter More Than Ever

When your job is to create extraordinary experiences for everyone else, how often do you get to enjoy one yourself?

If you’ve ever worked in event planning, you know that it’s not exactly a low-stress profession. You’re juggling tight deadlines, demanding clients, last-minute changes, complicated logistics, and a thousand moving parts. And somehow, you’re expected to make it all look effortless.

Add the responsibilities of leadership, managing teams, and navigating your own life outside of work, and it’s no wonder so many high-achieving women feel stretched thin. Which is why this gathering felt so special. For a few days, women who spend so much of their time taking care of everyone else’s needs had an opportunity to pause, connect, learn, laugh, and maybe even throw an axe or two.

And I was lucky enough to be the keynote speaker.

One of my favorite things about this event was the intimacy of the group.

Rather than speaking to hundreds of people in a massive ballroom, I had the opportunity to work with a smaller group of women who were genuinely eager to participate, share their experiences, and learn from one another.

And these women were ALL IN. When I asked questions, hands went up. Stories were shared. Conversations unfolded naturally.

We explored how easily high performers can get caught in the cycle of doing more, giving more, and saying yes to everyone else. We talked about boundaries, not as barriers that keep people out, but as essential tools for protecting our time, energy, and wellbeing.

Because here’s the thing:

Just because you’re capable of handling everything doesn’t mean you should have to.

For women in the meetings and events industry, who are often expected to be endlessly available, adaptable, and accommodating, that message is especially important.

And the best part? The conversations didn’t end when my session did.

They continued over lunch. At the rodeo. While we were being shuttled to the lake for an afternoon of shooting tin cans, practicing archery, and throwing axes.

Yes, bow and arrows!

And while these activities were incredibly fun, they also created opportunities for something deeper without the usual distractions, deadlines, and packed schedules. We had space to connect as people, not just professionals.

It reminded me that some of the most meaningful leadership development happens after the formal programming ends.

When people feel comfortable enough to open up, reflect, and connect, the lessons have a chance to sink in.

In martial arts, we learn to protect our physical space.

But in business and leadership, we also need to protect our mental, emotional, and energetic space. And that can be especially challenging for women who have built successful careers by being dependable, accommodating, and exceptionally good at what they do.

The better you are at handling things, the more people tend to hand you and expect of you. Sound familiar?

But being a strong leader doesn’t mean being available to everyone at all times. It means knowing when to step forward, when to delegate, when to say no, and when to make space for your own wellbeing.

It’s about developing the awareness and skills to navigate challenges without losing yourself in the process.

There’s something about being on horseback that immediately brings me back to childhood. The fresh air, the beautiful surroundings, the quiet rhythm of the ride. It was such a wonderful reminder of the importance of making time for experiences that bring us joy and it was the perfect way to close out a gathering centered on leadership, connection, and wellbeing.

The hosts created something truly special: an environment where accomplished women could learn, recharge, connect, and enjoy themselves. A true retreat back to nature and back to ourselves.

And we also need connection. We need opportunities to step outside our routines, share our experiences, laugh, try something new, and remember who we are beyond our professional responsibilities.

Perhaps most importantly, we need reminders that taking care of ourselves isn’t something we earn after we’ve taken care of everyone else.

It’s part of what allows us to lead well in the first place.

Strong leadership isn’t about doing it all. It’s about knowing what matters most and having the courage to protect it.

A huge thank-you to the teams at Prestige and Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Alisal Ranch, Agency44, and everyone who made this extraordinary gathering possible.

I’ll be carrying the conversations, connections, and memories with me for a long time.

Whether you’re planning a business conference, leadership summit, corporate retreat, or entrepreneurial event, my goal is to help your audience leave with more than inspiration. I want them to leave with practical tools and a powerful shift in how they show up.

Preorders are incredibly important for a new book. They help publishers, booksellers and the larger book world see that there is demand before publication day arrives. Most importantly to me, every preorder means these ideas have a chance to reach another person who may need them.
