When was the last time you felt triggered by the news, a text, or your own inner critic and wished you could stay calm instead of spiraling?
In this solo episode, host Jenn Cassetta shares why she’s been in creation mode for her new book, Secrets of the Sensei: Emotional Self-Defense to Protect Your Peace and Reclaim Your Power, and explains the goal: becoming the steady, discerning “sensei” of your life.
Drawing from martial arts, she offers three practical moves to protect your peace: build awareness by noticing body cues before a reaction takes over, regulate your nervous system with “stop, drop, and breathe” (three slow breaths), and choose your next right step by asking how your future self would respond. She also introduces a free Resilience Reservoir Assessment measuring physical, mental, emotional, and vision/flow reserves, with personalized prescriptions to refill them.

Unleashing Your Inner Sensei: Emotional Self-Defense for a Chaotic World
Welcome to The Art of Badassery! I’m Jenn Cassetta, and today, I’m thrilled to be sharing some insights from my solo journey into emotional self-defense. Life has been a hive of activity for me, with book edits, speaking engagements, and coaching all part of my orbit. But now, it’s just you and me, diving deep into ways we can protect our peace and reclaim our power.
The Journey from White Belt to Sensei
In my forthcoming book, “Secrets of the Sensei: Emotional Self-Defense to Protect Your Peace and Reclaim Your Power,” I map out nine secrets that will guide you to master your own life with the wisdom and calm of a sensei. Imagine transforming from student to teacher, as I’ve woven into a martial arts theme to embody this empowerment journey.
Why Emotional Self-Defense?
While physical threats may not confront us daily, emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges certainly do. To navigate this landscape, we need techniques that go beyond physical defense. Think of it as emotional self-defense—tools to help us handle negativity, stress, and self-doubt without being overwhelmed.

Three Moves to Master Emotional Self-Defense
- Awareness
Awareness is your first line of defense. Just as you maintain situational awareness in martial arts, stay tuned to what’s happening inside your body. Are your shoulders tense? Is your heart racing? Recognizing these signals helps create space between stimulus and reaction. - Regulation
Remember the childhood drill of stop, drop, and roll? Here, it’s stop, drop, and breathe. Breathing deeply with awareness can regulate your nervous system, bringing you back to calmness and clarity. Practice the sensei breath: inhale deeply through the nose, pause, then exhale through the nose or mouth. - Choose Your Next Right Action
Cultivate the ability to choose your next step consciously. Instead of reacting on impulse, consider how your future self would want you to respond. This power of choice can transform not only your immediate reactions but your life trajectory.
Embrace Your Inner Sensei
Life’s challenges can be overwhelming, but mastering your internal responses keeps you grounded. Whether it’s dealing with criticism or curbing your inner critic’s voice, these tools are your ally. I encourage you to explore the Resilience Reservoir Assessment I’ve developed to measure and enhance your coping strategies.
Stay connected with me on social media, and let’s keep this discussion going. Your journey to becoming your own sensei has never been more crucial or more empowering. Thank you for being here, and I’m excited to share more tools and insights in the months and years to come.
Key Takeaways:
- Awareness is Key: Understanding your body’s reactions to stressful situations helps create space to choose your response.
- Regulate Through Breathing: Practicing mindful breathing can calm your nervous system and help maintain inner peace.
- Mindful Decisions Over Impulsive Reactions: Developing the habit of consciously choosing your reactions can lead to positive life changes.

Jenn Cassetta welcomes back clinical psychologist and Conscious Parenting Movement founder Dr. Shefali to unpack her urgent new books, Raising Conscious Daughters and Raising Conscious Sons. Drawing from anxious parents and conversations with more than 100 kids, Dr. Shefali explores what children need most in a world with less stillness, boredom, space, and delayed gratification. Navigating Conscious Parenting in a Chaotic World with Dr. Shefali
Welcome to a highlight from “The Art of Badassery” podcast, where host Jenn Cassetta recently sat down for a captivating exchange with the renowned Dr. Shefali Tsabary. This enlightening discussion traverses the evolving landscape of parenting amidst the ever-advancing challenges of the digital age. Together, they delve into the pressing issues that modern parents face and explore actionable strategies laid out in Dr. Shefali’s forthcoming books: “Raising Conscious Sons” and “Raising Conscious Daughters.”
Meeting Dr. Shefali
Dr. Shefali is a clinical psychologist, bestselling author, and the founding voice behind the Conscious Parenting Movement. Through her work, she seamlessly intertwines Western psychology with Eastern wisdom, aiming to transform conventional approaches to parenting by emphasizing presence, authenticity, and awareness.
Jenn underscores the urgency of Dr. Shefali’s new projects, which arrive at a time when parenting demands both innovation and adaptability. The conversation offers both parents and non-parents insights into fostering a nurturing environment that empowers children to develop autonomy and self-awareness.
Defining Consciousness in Parenting
The discussion opens with a foundational question: “What does being conscious mean to you?” Dr. Shefali outlines a framework of awareness, beginning with the acknowledgment of conditioning that influences the mind and culminates in self-transformation. Conscious parenting, she explains, is not merely about guiding children, but about embarking on an introspective journey as parents.
Parental Challenges and the Need for a Blueprint
Dr. Shefali’s growing concern for contemporary parental challenges sparked the creation of her two new books, which serve as roadmaps for mindful upbringing in a chaotic world. By exploring gender-specific vulnerabilities, she aims to equip parents with tools to raise sons and daughters who are resilient, aware, and ready to engage with the complexities of modern life.

Empowering Girls: Building Confidence and Courage
In “Raising Conscious Daughters,” Dr. Shefali tackles the silent struggle with perfectionism many girls face. Despite their competence, insecurity often gnaws at their self-worth. She emphasizes the importance of allowing girls to express their authentic voices free from societal pressures of perfection and approval.
Guiding Boys: Promoting Healthy Masculinity
Dr. Shefali also addresses the unique challenges boys face, advocating for the recognition of their innate need for movement and tactile learning. In “Raising Conscious Sons,” she explores how embracing, rather than suppressing, boys’ energetic expressions can combat feelings of shame that might otherwise drive them toward toxic influences.
The Role of Social Media and Boredom
The conversation takes a poignant turn as Dr. Shefali critiques the impact of constant digital stimulation on young minds. She advocates for delaying children’s exposure to social media, suggesting that childhood’s true essence lies in unstructured time, boredom, and creative exploration.

Key Takeaways
- Cultivate Awareness: Conscious parenting starts with personal introspection, encouraging parents to become attuned to their intrinsic beliefs and fears.
- Nurture Authenticity: Allow children to grow into their authentic selves by fostering environments that celebrate their voices rather than dictating their paths.
- Promote Mindful Engagement: Encourage delayed gratification and creativity in children by minimizing their reliance on digital platforms and structured activities.
